Today’s headlines: 

+   Notable product debuts at the New York Auto Show include the Genesis Gran Equator Concept, the, Jeep Wagoneer Overland Special Edition, and the 2026 Subaru Ouback. More at Motor Trend. 

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has banned terms such as “smart” and “autonomous driving” from car ads following a well-publicized crash. More at Tech in Asia. 

+   Tesla sales in California, the EV maker’s most important market, fell 15 percent in the first quarter of 2025, while registrations for other EV brands increased 35 percent. More at Electrek. 

+   This year’s Long Beach Grand Prix set an all-time weekend attaendance record of 200,000 visitors, according to Jim Michaelian of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. More at Racer. 

+   President Trump’s tariffs and surrounding confusion are  “adversely impacting” the auto industry, says Swamy Kotagi, CEO of Canadian automotive supplier Magna International. More at The Detroit News. 

+   Volkswagen confirmed it is still considering a uniit-construction pickup for the U.S. market, while also announcing that the low-priced ID.1 and ID.2 EVs will not be offered here. More at Car and Driver. 

+   David Dello Stritto, head of Subaru’s European division, says European regulations are responsible for the lack of an STI and other performance cars in its current lineup. More at The Drive. 

+   Ford Informed its dealers it may increase prices on new vehicles if President  Trump’s auto tariffs continue, though consumers likely won’t feel the effects until early July. More at CBT News. 

+   More than 250 cars will be offered at Worldwide Auctioneers’ annual Enthusiast Auction in Auburn, Indiana on April 25-26, including a 1955 Cadillac from Driving Miss Daisy. More at Old Cars. 

+   Despite frustrations with the current car, Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen says he is happy at Red Bull and dismissed rumors that he could leave the team at year’s end. More at The Guardian.
