Now going on 68 years, the Greenfield Village Old Car Festival is the granddaddy of vintage car shows. Here’s MCG’s report on this year’s event with a big photo gallery.
Way back in 1929 when Henry Ford opened the unique historical theme park he called Greenfield Village, he probably didn’t have future old car shows in mind, but it sure did work out well. With its period-correct boulevards and buildings, it’s the perfect setting for a vintage car gathering—the next best thing to a time machine. Many of the employees, exhibitors, and volunteers are dressed in period costume, adding to the historical fun, while antique bicycles, buses, and taxis carry visitors through the streets of the village. For five dollars, you can even take a tour of the show in one of the Village’s fleet of original Model T Fords.
Another key element in the show’s atmosphere is the entry cutoff date: Only vehicles manufactured in or before 1932 are allowed. With today’s collector car scene dominated by sports cars and ’60s muscle machines, the Old Car Festival has a feel all its own, allowing visitors the opportunity to see vehicles they wouldn’t encounter anywhere else. To no one’s surprise, the vintage Ford products are plentiful, including Henry’s venerated Model T. Popular then, popular now. And while Henry really did say, “You can have any color you like, as long as it’s black,” there were some exceptions to the rule, particularly at the beginning and end of the Model T’s production run. To make things interesting, we included some of these colorful examples in our photo gallery.
Of course, the annual Old Car Festival is just one event on the year-long calendar of The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village. We went last night. Enjoy watching all the cars run through the Village with their head lamps on.
I could not make it this year but will be going once again next year. Something really special about this event. Among many things amazing seeing so many Model T’s in one spot! Probably more than any other gathering.
I attended on Saturday….was informed there were between 700 – 800 cars in attendance. weather was perfect, low temp and partly cloudy.
I couldn’t gauge the car count, too spread out. Do you think it was that many?
Yes was told over 700 cars by employee of village.
