GM unveils its 2014 pickups

General Motors has uncloaked the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra pickups that will go on sale in the second quarter of 2013. Click though for the big photo gallery.

GM’s 2014 pickups will be totally fresh pieces next year, with redesigned chassis and three new EcoTec3 engines, a 4.3L V6, a 5.3L V8, and a 6.2L V8, all with variable valve timing. All three engines employ aluminum blocks, while the V8s feature cylinder deactivation for maximum fuel efficiency. EPAS (electric power-assist steering) is now standard, while cabs and beds are re-engineered as well.

Mac’s Motor City Garage will be circling back with more technical details and analysis, but for now, here are the pretty pictures released by GM today. First, here’s a graphic detailing the exterior design changes on the GMC version, 2013 versus 2014.

Next, here’s a slide show gallery with a selection of photos of both the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra:

  1. The size and especially the height of the front ends on these is very very silly. Though it seems to be “normal” for American pickups to have a front end as big as a block of apartments, or at least nearly as big as a Kenworth front end. Is it just marketing, is it what the buyers want? Or is there some other reason for it? Seems crazy to put a box on the front that’s so big that you need parking assist on the end that you’re facing. To me it just looks really silly.

  2. Grumbles: Yep, the big Kenworth front doghouse is all about marketing. Also the needlessly tall ride height. There is not much about the pickup market that makes sense from a utilitarian perspective. Very few of these trucks will ever be used as trucks more than once or twice. Look at the interiors.
