Eleven Formula 1 Races The Wrong Driver Won

They say fate is a cruel mistress. Here are 11 memorable examples in Formula 1 where one driver had a very good day, and another driver had a very bad one. Watch.

This brilliant little video comes to us courtesy of the folks at Autosport, who have been covering the crazy, high-pressure world of Formula 1 racing for as long, and as well, as most anyone. Narrated by Glenn Freeman, this item is in the proud tradition of the racing weekly founded way back in 1950, the dawn of the modern Grand Prix era.

Now, MCG will admit that when he first glimpsed the clip’s title, he resented the premise a little bit. In our view, barring a scoring error of some kind, the “right” driver always wins every race. That’s just how racing works. Everything else is excuses. Ifs and buts and sour grapes, boo hoo. But that’s not where the editors were going at all.

Here, Autosport is simply noting some memorable examples where certain victory was stolen away by the fickle finger of fate, by feckless team orders, or by other bizarre events. And they’ve picked some great examples, too. Enjoy this fascinating little slice of Formula 1 history.

  1. Those are some good examples but I think I could name some better ones. Nice video though.

  2. Ye Gods! Haven’t looked at F1 cars for a while (like 20 years). Could they be more ugly?

  3. The obvious is Shumacher at Monaco where he was way faster in the very wet and they stopped the race short.
Oh and that and Shumacher unloading Damon into the wall at Adelaide and getting away with it
