Billetproof Michigan 2014

1940 Ford flathead V8 Mark HarrisThe traditional hot rod show known as Billetproof Michigan celebrated its 10th anniversary this past weekend. Here’s a full report and a big photo gallery.

Wow, has it been 10 years already? Billetproof Michigan hosted its first event at the Davisburg Fairgrounds in 2004, ultimately relocating to Riverside Park in Ypsilanti in 2010. Last year the hot rod show moved to Milan Dragway to partner up with the Detroit Dragway Reunion, another popular retro-traditional event in the Motor City area.

The two events share the MIlan dragstrip for the day, with the Detroit Dragway Reunion taking the pit side of the track and the Billetproof guys utilizing the grassy, shaded area around the grandstands on the spectator side. (See MCG’s full coverage of the 2014 Detroit Dragway Reunion here.

The partnership appears to work well for both groups, with plenty of crossover interest, we presume. MCG noticed that this year, the Billetproof show entry requirements have loosened up: There were late ’60s muscle cars and even a few billet-equipped street rods in the display area.

A few of MCG’s favorites at Billetproof 2014:

+   Leslie Dreist’s beautiful 1939 Ford is the real deal, originally built in Southern California in 1947. With a potent Mercury V8 under the hood, the radically customized convertible ran 120.35 mph at El Mirage in 1950.

+   Dave De Baar’s 1930 Ford Model A Coupe sits perfectly on its 1932 Ford frame rails, powered by a 289 Ford V8 with nice detailing and four vintage two-barrel carbs.

+   Dorr Johnson’s Chevy-powered Model A Ford Coupe features just the right amount of gold lacquer and early ’60s show-rod bling. We never get tired of seeing this car at local events.

  1. I’ll take the 54 convertible with Lancer wheel covers and lake pipes. Sweet!
