To celebrate the latest edition of the open-air 911 Targa, Porsche produced this awesome little video history.
The trendsetting greenhouse design of the 1967 Porsche 911 Targa arose from two concerns, it’s said. First, how to construct a convertible-top sports car without compromising the structural rigidity of the body, thus sacrificing performance. Next, how to address impending government safety rollover standards, which were then threatening to to send convertibles into extinction altogether. The simple and elegant Porsche solution: a robust, stainless steel-covered roll hoop, which the company named the Targa in honor of its successes in the Targa Florio, the famed Sicilian road race. The Targa was success from the start, as fully one-quarter of the company’s first-generation 911 models were produced in the transformable, open-air body style.
Since then the Targa models have continually evolved to make use of the latest technological developments, losing and then regaining the familiar stainless steel basket handle. To celebrate the latest version of the Targa roof in the 992-series 911 for 2021, Porsche produced this nifty little clip that includes a timeline and some historical highlights. Enjoy the video.
