2021 Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s

After a year off due to the pandemic, the Concours of America at St. John’s returned this past weekend as one of the country’s top classic car shows.

Following weeks of unseasonably heavy rainfall throughout Southeast Michigto an, organizers of the annual Concours d’Elegance of America were forced to call an audible just one day before the show, but they executed their play perfectly. With the golf course at the Inn at St. John’s hopelessly waterlogged, they relocated the entire event up to higher and dryer ground on the parking lots surrounding the Inn. True, the new setting wasn’t quite as elegant as the green fairways of St. John’s, but at least it was dry, and the parking lots gave the event a friendly and informal cars-and-coffee vibe. And most importantly, the exhibitors were able display their cars, and thousands of visitors were once again treated to one of the world’s top classic car shows.

Speaking of venues, this seems like a good time to mention that after 42 years of continuous events, the Concours is moving next year, from July to September on the calendar, and from The Inn at St. John’s to the Detroit Institute of Arts in the city’s trendy Sugar Hill arts district along Woodward Avenue. This is big news for both the event, now owned by Hagerty, and for the city of Detroit, and we can’t wait to see what partners Hagerty and the DIA have in store for next year.

Back to this year’s event: Best in Show honors for American vehicles went to a stunning 1937 Cadillac V16 Series 90 Convertible with bodywork by Willy Hartmann of Paris, owned by the Patterson collection. Best of Show among foreign entries was awarded to the ex-Phil Hill 1953 Ferrari 250MM roadster by Vignale from the Cultivated Collector collection. (Both cars shown above.)  Of course, these were just two of the  hundreds of world-class cars on display, and you can find a small sample of them in the gallery below. 1. It was another wonderful show but the parking lot venue was not flattering to the cars.
