From colorful ’60s Gassers to vintage Rolls-Royces, the whole wide world of automobiles was on display at the 2019 Concours d’Elegance of America.
The Concours d’Elegance of America—known to car enthusiasts everywhere as the St. John’s Concours—is one of the top classic car shows in the country. The event, which takes its nickname from the elegant Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan, only a few miles west of Detroit, has become a Motor City institution. Among other things, St. John’s has become known for its knowledgeable curating and impressive variety. A few of the special categories this year:
+ The Rise and Fall of the Cadillac Fin: A retrospective on Harley Earl’s signature Cadillac feature, the classic tail fins of 1948 through 1964.
+ Drag Racing: St. John’s invariably includes a category for historic drag racers, and this year the spotlight was on Gassers—the wild and colorful gas coupes and sedans of the ’60s.
+ American Power — Foreign Power: Cars that combined the best of two worlds, classic European design and rugged American powertrains.
….and of course, the usual categories for American and European classics and sports cars, as well as vintage cars of all eras. We couldn’t possibly fit all the hundreds of exceptional vehicles here. The gallery below is but a small sample—click on any image to launch a slide show.
Maybe a stupid question, but I have to ask; what is that stunning gargoyle looking thing on the Rolls-Royce fender ? Air intake ? Horn ? Spotlight ?
There are certainly a lot of beautiful cars there.
It’s a bulb horn.
