In 1967, Lotus and Cosworth were reshaping the sport of Formula 1 with the assistance of Jim Clark and Graham Hill.
The date is July 15, 1967. The place is the historic Silverstone Circuit around 70 miles northwest of London, and the event is the British Grand Prix. Colin Chapman and his Team Lotus are halfway through a groundbreaking season in Formula 1, propelled by the new Cosworth DFV V8. Developed by Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin with the financial support of the Ford Motor Company, the DFV was introduced at the Dutch Grand Prix in June. From that point forward, a Cosworth-powered Lotus 49 took the pole at every event for the rest of the ’67 season with Team Lotus drivers Graham Hill and Jim Clark.
Clark and Hill dominated the weekend at Silverstone as well, qualifying first and second, but Hill would fall to the rear with chassis troubles, allowing Clark to speed away essentially unchallenged. This clip, courtesy of Ford Heritage in the UK, is actually an excerpt from a longer Ford Motor Company film celebrating the historic 1967 season. One way to view the history of Formula 1 is pre-and-post-1967. There’s everything that happened before the Cosworth DFV, and everything that came after.
