Video: Sleeper VW Microbus with Porsche 993 Twin-Turbo Power

porsche-busJust for fun, here’s a vintage Volkswagen microbus with an interesting powerplant choice: 530 hp Porsche 993 Turbo. Watch the little monster tearing around Italy’s Monza road circuit here.

Fred Bernhard of Switzerland is the constructor of this beast, which reportedly took around five years to complete. (Hat tip to 19Bozzy of YouTube and Facebook for the story and footage.) There’s a full-race chassis and roll cage built into the fearsome little box, and in the engine room there’s a Porsche 993 intercooled twin-turbo tuned to pump out 520 hp. Whee!

Among other things, Bernard uses his 1961 bus for events like 6 Ruote di Speranza at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza race circuit in Italy, where disabled folks have the opportunity to take on-track rides in exotic street and racing equipment. With three built-in racing seats and harness sets, the Race Taxi, as Bernard calls it, is ideally configured for the task. Doing good deeds and having wicked fun: What could be more awesome? Video below.

  1. A local off road racer and constructor had a Kombi ute using his Porsche off road racing engine. Everyday workhorse, a very quick one.
That bus running around the ring with passegers is ok but no helmets is not.
Like many I have seen Sabine Schmidt doing the same thing. Stupidly dangerous.
