Video: Road Testing the 1960 Mercury

In clear, beautiful color, this nicely preserved Ford Motor Company spot introduces the 1960 Mercury line. Check out the catchy rhymes.

The 1960 Mercury was a one-year design but it was a memorable one, with broadly spaced quad headlamps, a pair of bold, towering tail lamps, and a curvy, wraparound rear window that resembled a second windshield. The distinctive backlite was actually a carryover from the previous year—lead stylist A.B. “Buzz” Grisinger did an expert job revising the poorly received ’59 Merc and its Turnpike Cruiser theme. Viewers might never know that underneath the exterior sheet metal wrap, the ’59 and ’60 Mercury share the same body structure. All Mercury models for 1960 rolled on the same 126-inch wheelbase, powered by an all-V8 engine lineup that ranged from 312 to 430 cubic inches. Two different three-speed automatic transmissions were offered: the single-range Merc-O-Matic and the dual-range Multi-Drive.

In this nicely preserved two-minute spot—we prize the bright, beautiful color, a relative rarity in these old clips—a fleet of 13 Mercury models are sent down the road on a 10,000 mile reliability test. That’s the premise of the commercial, anyway. To accompany the action, there’s an enthusiastic rhyming voiceover. We know the ad agency crew had fun writing that stuff. Video below.

  1. He’s got me psyched to buy one. I pity the guy assigned to the open convertible in the middle of the desert but I doubt many had air conditioning.

Compare the promo photo of the Mercury wagon to yesterday’s Kia Niro. Better color and clarity, better setting. They knew how to sell a car back then.
