Video: Cruz Pedregon Takes a Wild Ride in Las Vegas

cruz-pedregonVeteran Funny Car driver Cruz Pedregon took one of the crazier rides in drag racing history at the NHRA Toyota Nationals in Las Vegas this past weekend. But fortunately, he nailed the landing. Watch this.

Two-time NHRA Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon has taken some memorable trips down the drag strip in his 25-year professional career, but nothing quite like his first-round pass at Las Vegas this past weekend. Lined up against number five qualifier Robert Hight, Cruz appeared to have his opponent well covered when, at around the 300-ft. mark, his Snap-On Toyota snapped into a massive wheelstand, yanking all four tires clear of the pavement. Fortunately, the car’s wheelie bar assembly held up (see still image above) and prevented the chassis from launching into a complete blowover.

At that point, Cruz’s quick reactions and cool demeanor kicked in, as described by his younger brother Tony Pedregon, who happens to be the color commentator in the Fox Sports television announcing booth. “When it came down, he didn’t overreact,” said Tony. “He maintained the steering in the car and got it landed. This is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in drag racing.” Cruz even managed to stay centered in his lane and win the round with a 4.244 ET at over 218 mph, though the car was too damaged to continue. Now hang on, and courtesy of Fox Sports, watch this.

    • All apologies. This generally means the broadcaster (Fox Sports in this case) has alternate distribution paths in Australia. Sorry for your inconvenience.

  1. If you have never been to a NHRA funny car event in Las Vegas you are missing a really great event. Even if you are new to the sport, give it a chance. You may find that there other things to do for enjoyment in Las Vegas other than go to the shows and gamble. Give it a try.
