EyesOn Design 2016

1963 Studebaker Avanti John PetruPresenting one of our favorite collector car shows in the Motor City: the EyesOn Design Automotive Design Exhibition. Here’s our report on this year’s event with a big photo gallery.

For gearheads, EyesOn Design is a Motor City tradition. If you’re a Detroit-area car enthusiast and it’s Father’s Day, the odds are pretty good you’ll be at the show, held each year in Grosse Pointe Shores at the posh Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, which is a historical treasure in itself. One of the top collector car events in the country, EyesOn Design benefits an eminently worthy cause: the research programs of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology.

Where other car shows are known to select their vehicles based on monetary value, rarity, or status in the collector car community, at EyesOn Design the focus is on one thing: excellence in automotive design, and in vehicles of every period, class, and price category. This unique perspective makes the event rather special among car shows. Every year at EyesOn Design, the 20 members of the Vehicle Selection Committee seem to outdo themselves in creating imaginative new exhibition categories, and then searching the country to find exceptional cars to fill them.

Among our favorite vehicle categories this year were “Pontiac Performance and Design,” featuring memorable Pontiac models of the muscle car era, and “On the Road, Again: Fifty Years of Vintage Camping Rigs and Trailers.” From the approximately 360 cars invited to this year’s event, you can find a very small sample in the gallery below. 1. Absolutely one of my favorite events of the year. If you like cars and find yourself within a half day’s drive (or flight) of Detroit on Father’s Day, you need to attend.

  2. What a Fabulous Show. My father and I came all the way from southwest Virginia and were not disappointed.
