Dreams and Nightmares: the home edition

Camaro Chevrolet Pickup modYou don’t need the resources of a global automaker to build your dream car. All you need is a dream. Here are the good, the bad, and the ugly in homebuilt autos.

At the Detroit Autorama this past weekend, on display were some of the finest handcrafted custom vehicles in America. These are not those cars.

No, these machines represent the outsider art of the automotive world, you could say. No trained designers or professional fabricators stepped between these builders and their dreams, you can be sure of that.

You know how we can tell you people are real, unreformed gearheads? We know you’re going to look at these cars, and no matter how awful they may look, each one of you is going to select at least one and say to yourself, “You know, that’s not that bad. That sort of works. All it really needs are the right paint and wheels.”

Besides, we’re not judging. There’s obvious tongue-in-cheek in many of these creations. And in their own way, every one of these dream cars is a manifestation of sincere automotive enthusiasm. Gallery below.

  1. I think they’re all great. It shows we’re limited only by our imagination. My favorite(s), it’s a toss up between the Pontiac convertible or the Marquis DeSoto. Finnjet,,, too much.

  2. I like the Beetle.

The rest, well, I guess points for thinking “outside the box”.

  3. I like the Corvettte with the truck front end. I would paint it to resemble an African beast.

  4. Can’t be hard to design and build your own car – Right! I often wonder when I see vehicles like these what medications or planet the builders were on when they thought – Now, I’ll show’em how its done! Funnily enough, I’ve seen worse.

  5. The Lincoln Bugatti and the Marquis DeSoto are pretty cool customs. Photo 17 of the fellow with his duded-up Pontiac convertible I’ve seen before as a postcard. Still have it. 😀

  6. Pics 7,9,12, 16&17 make some very vague sense. Though the only one that I would be seen in is the Roller ute.
The wooden Nissan takes the cake I feel, or maybe the stretch Camaro.
