Autorama Extreme: The Basement Show at Detroit Autorama 2015

Delray SlimDelray Slim says, “If you’re old school like me, be sure to check out all the traditional-style hot rods ‘n customs in the basement show at the Detroit Autorama. They’re swell!”      

 

 

Here are just a few of MCG’s favorites from the basement show at the 2015 Detroit Autorama, otherwise known as Autorama Extreme, the exhibit space dedicated to traditional hot rods and stuff:

+  The amazing garage find uncovered by Chris Mizzi, Ray Gonzalez, and Chris Gonzalez, a channeled ’32 Ford coupe that raced in the early days at Motor City and Detroit Dragway, first with a flathead V8 and then with Chrysler hemi power. Even the air in the tires is 50 years old.

+   Still under construction by Fox Valley Hot Rods of Chicago, a traditional-style belly tanker powered by a petite Ford 60 hp V8 with GMC blower and Ardun heads. We can’t wait to see this jewel when it’s completed.

+   A 1948 Kurtis-Offy owned by Joshua Shaw. Powered by a thundering 220 CID four-cylinder Offy, this venerable racer reportedly ran in the Indianapolis 500 multiple times, starting in 1949 when Hal Cole drove it to a 19th place finish.

    • Hi Andy, I agree. It seems a shame these cool hot rods are relegated to the “basement”.

  1. I had to be out of town this year so I missed seeing Delray Slim and his band of outlaws. Made up for it a bit by visiting the amazing Old Crow Speed Shop in Burbank. It’s a must see for any true enthusiast who finds himself or herself in Southern California.

  2. I wonder if Joshua Shaw (with the Kurtis-Offy) is any relation to Wilber Shaw of Indy 500 fame?

    • I don’t know this but I suspect not, as Joshua is pretty well known around the biz and it hasn’t come up.

  3. Bill – I only provide this because I know you sweat details…those are not Ardun heads on the Fox Valley V860…they are Simca heads from (IIRC) Brazil. Same bore spacing, same or similar oil drain back holes but cooling passages don’t line up with V860 deck. Fox Valley will make necessary mods to render that into an even cooler piece. They sold Brizio the Ardun heads he used on the AMBR-winning track T from a few years back. I learned a lot in a short converati on in COBO basement this year. Thought you’d enjoy.
